In the early days and weeks of breastfeeding, your baby will likely want to nurse very frequently - typically 8-12 times within each 24-hour period, or roughly every 2-3 hours. However, it's important to remember that this is just an average, and your baby may want to feed more or less often. Rather than watching the clock, it's best to feed your baby "on demand," which means feeding whenever they show hunger cues like rooting (turning their head and opening their mouth), sucking on their hands, or making soft crying sounds. Some feeds might be closer together, especially during cluster feeding periods, while others might be further apart.
As for how long each feeding should last, this can vary significantly from baby to baby and even from feed to feed. Some babies are efficient and may only need 10-15 minutes at the breast, while others might feed for 20-45 minutes. In the early weeks, it's recommended to let your baby feed from the first breast until they naturally come off or slow down significantly, which usually indicates they're finished with that side. Then offer the second breast - they may or may not want it. Don't worry about timing each feed; instead, watch your baby's cues. Signs they're getting enough include appearing satisfied after feeds, having 6-8 wet diapers per day, and gaining weight appropriately. Remember that these patterns will change as your baby grows, and they'll likely become more efficient at nursing over time.
