Mom Tips
Am I making enough milk?
As a new mother, it's completely normal to worry about whether you're producing enough milk for your baby. This is one of the most common concerns among breastfeeding mothers. Here are reliable ways to tell if your baby is getting enough milk:
Signs your baby is getting enough milk:
Consistent weight gain: Your baby should regain their birth weight by 10-14 days after birth and then continue gaining weight (about 5-7 oz per week in the first few months)
Frequent feedings: 8-12 feedings in 24 hours is normal
Wet diapers: 6+ wet diapers per day after day 4-5 of life
Bowel movements: Several yellow, seedy stools daily in the first month (this may decrease to fewer bowel movements after the first month)
Alert and active: Your baby seems satisfied after feedings and is generally alert during awake periods
Breast changes: You notice your breasts feel fuller before feeding and softer afterward
Common misconceptions about milk supply:
Soft breasts don't mean low supply: After the first few weeks, your breasts may feel less full as they adjust to your baby's needs
Fussy behavior isn't always hunger: Babies fuss for many reasons besides hunger
Frequent feeding is normal: Newborns often feed every 1-3 hours and cluster feed during growth spurts
Pumping output isn't a reliable indicator: Many women pump less than their baby actually gets when nursing
If you're concerned about your milk supply, I recommend consulting with a lactation consultant or your healthcare provider before making any changes to your feeding routine. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation.
